A Glimpse into the Past: The Headdress of Queen Puabi
Today, designers frequently look to the past for inspiration, reviving ancient motifs and reinterpreting them for contemporary wear. In doing so, they create jewelry that feels both timeless and meaningful, connecting the wearer to a much older story.
One of the most striking examples of ancient motifs is the headdress of Queen Puabi, discovered in the Royal Tombs of Ur in Mesopotamia. Dating to around 2600 BCE, this extraordinary piece features layers of gold leaves, beads of lapis lazuli and carnelian, and intricate floral elements arranged in a structured yet graceful composition.
The motifs used in the headdress leaves, rosettes, and natural forms reflect themes of fertility, abundance, and divine beauty. These elements were not chosen at random; they conveyed status, spiritual belief, and connection to the natural world.
Our modern interpretation draws inspiration from the poplar leaves of the headdress.
