The Beautiful Windows of the Founder’s Chapel at Batalha Monastery

The windows at the Founder’s Chapel in the Monastery of Batalha, Portugal, are a significant aspect of this Gothic architectural masterpiece. The monastery, also known as the Monastery of Saint Mary of the Victory (Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória), commemorated the Portuguese victory over the Castilians at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385.

The windows are quintessentially Gothic, characterized by their pointed arches and intricate tracery. This style allows for windows that allow more light to enter the space and create an ethereal and spiritual atmosphere. Many of the windows are adorned with beautiful stained glass. The stained glass dates back to different periods, with some pieces being original and others added or restored in later centuries.

The Chapel was commissioned by King John I of Portugal. It houses the tombs of the king and his wife, Philippa of Lancaster, along with other members of the Avis dynasty.

The windows contribute significantly to the chapel’s solemn and majestic ambiance, reflecting the artistic and religious values of the period. Our chapel-inspired earrings feature transparent epoxy, giving the look of real stained glass.
